Google said on Wednesday that it is launching a native Gemini app for Mac, expanding access to its AI assistant on Apple’s desktop platform.

The move brings Google in line with rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic, which already offer Mac apps for their AI products.

In a blog post, Google said users will be able to open Gemini from anywhere on their Mac with the shortcut Option + Space, allowing them to use the service without leaving their current task.

The company said the app can also analyse content displayed on a user’s screen, including local files. For example, users looking at a complex chart can ask Gemini to identify the three main takeaways and receive a summary.

Google added that the app supports image generation through Nano Banana and video generation through Veo.

The native macOS app is available globally from Wednesday for Gemini users running macOS 15 or later, and can be downloaded from Google’s Gemini website.
