Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the Farmers’ Card programme, sending Tk 2,500 each to the mobile wallets of 22,065 marginal farmers across 11 upazilas, including Tangail Sadar.

The launch took place around 12:15pm on Pahela Baishakh at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail.

The financial assistance was transferred instantly to farmers’ mobile wallets after the prime minister pressed a button on a laptop at the venue.

The programme marks another step in fulfilling the BNP government’s election pledges, following the rollout of the Family Card, Sports Card and canal excavation initiatives.

At the event, Tarique Rahman also handed over Farmers’ Cards and saplings to 15 farmers.

He arrived at Shaheed Maruf Stadium at 11:20am and greeted farmers from the stage. During the ceremony, one male and one female farmer expressed gratitude for receiving the cards and thanked the prime minister for the support.

The programme organised by the Ministry of Agriculture was presided over by the Agriculture Minister Aminur Rashid.

Among others present were Prime Minister’s political adviser and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and local MP Sultan Salauddin, FAO Representative in Bangladesh Jiaoqun Shi, and Agriculture Secretary Rafiqul Islam.

Earlier, the prime minister left his residence in Dhaka at around 8:58am and travelled by road to Tangail.

Since early morning, farmers from Tangail Sadar and nearby areas, dressed in colourful attire, streamed into the stadium.

Local representatives described the launch as a historic moment for Tangail, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to improving farmers’ living standards.

Farmers attending the event expressed hope that the card would ease their struggles, especially in accessing seeds, irrigation, and financial support.
