Amirul inspired Bangladesh secured their second straight victory in their maiden Junior World Cup campaign as they outplayed South Korea 5-3 in the 17/20 place-deciding match in Madurai International Hockey Stadium in Tamil Nadu, India on Saturday.
Scoring his fourth hat-trick in the fifth match, Amirul continued an outstanding form to extend personal goal tally to 15 and sat solely as tournament’s top scorer.
Bangladesh had also faced Korea in the group stage where the game ended in 3-3 draw after the junior boys in red and green made a stunning comeback from trailing 3-0 down.
Korea also took a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes following Lee Minhyeok’s brace.
Amirul responded with his first goal of the match within a minute after Minhyeok converted a penalty stroke. He got his second three minutes later before bagging treble in the 35th minute.
The new drag and flick sensation of Bangladesh hockey, Amirul, scored first two goals from penalty corners. The third one came off a penalty stroke.
Obaidul Joy extended the lead from a field goal in the 52nd minute. Minhyeok sored again to complete his hat-trick in the next minute but their aim to take the control dented away as Rakibul Hasan’s strike seal the fate of the game in the last minute.
Bangladesh will now face Austria in the 17/18th place-deciding match on Monday.
Earlier on Thursday, Bangladesh rode on Amirul and Rakibul's brilliant hat-trick to earn a record-breaking 13-0 win over Oman in the 17/24 place-deciding match of the tournament.
In the group phase, Bangladesh suffered a fighting 5-3 goals defeat to strong Australia in their opening match, despite a magnificent hat-trick by Aminul Islam. They also came from behind to hold South Korea to a 3-3 draw in their second group match.
The boys and red and green again put up a brave performance conceding 3-2 defeat to reigning runners-up France in their third and ultimate group match.
