The most strategically important product in today's economy is smaller than a fingernail. Semiconductor's power everything from smartphones and artificial intelligence to electric vehicles, medical equipment and defence systems, making them the backbone of the digital age. The National Semiconductor Symposium and Bangladesh Electronics, AI and Robotics (BEAR) Summit 2026, held in Dhaka on 25-26 July under the theme "Building Bangladesh's Semiconductor Future through Global Partnership," marked Bangladesh's formal ambition to become part of this global industry. Bringing together policymakers, technology leaders, researchers, investors, universities and diaspora professionals, the summit placed semiconductors at the centre of the country's next phase of industrial transformation.
The Next Export Frontier
The ready-made garment (RMG) industry transformed Bangladesh, creating millions of jobs and integrating the country into global markets. Yet sustained growth will require industries that generate greater productivity, technological capability and higher-value exports. Semiconductors offer such an opportunity. Global sales reached US$791.7 billion in 2025 and are projected to approach US$1 trillion, driven by artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, data centres and advanced manufacturing. At the recent Dhaka summit, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman described semiconductors as Bangladesh's next major growth engine after RMG. He announced policy support, tax incentives and investment-friendly reforms, including duty exemptions on key inputs and plans for specialised infrastructure. These initiatives are encouraging.
Bangladesh Is Not Starting from Zero
Bangladesh's semiconductor industry is still modest but is steadily emerging. According to the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), semiconductor-related exports currently total about US$8 million, while the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA) aims to raise exports to US$1 billion by 2030. The country already has more than 700 chip designers and produces over 20,000 engineering and computing graduates each year. Local firms are increasingly providing chip design, verification and testing services to global clients. To accelerate this progress, the National Semiconductor Taskforce has recommended a dedicated semiconductor fund, advanced training facilities and shared cleanroom infrastructure. The recent summit reinforced this momentum through initiatives such as the Centre of Research Excellence in Semiconductor Technology (CREST), the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) semiconductor research facility, the BRAINGAIN diaspora network and expanded industry-oriented training for young engineers.
Choosing the Right Starting Point
The semiconductor industry is not limited to expensive fabrication plants. It is a global value chain spanning chip design, fabrication, packaging, testing and integration into final products. Bangladesh should adopt a design-first, capability-led strategy rather than pursue advanced wafer fabrication, which demands enormous capital, sophisticated infrastructure and complex supply chains. The country's greatest opportunities lie in chip design, assembly, packaging and testing, and embedded systems. Malaysia successfully followed a similar path, progressing from assembly and testing to higher-value activities. Over time, Bangladesh can expand into specialised products such as sensors, power semiconductors and mature-node chips. The objective is not to produce every type of chip, but to build internationally competitive strengths in carefully selected segments of the global semiconductor value chain.
Talent Must Come Before Technology
Talent development must be the foundation of Bangladesh's semiconductor strategy. Producing engineering graduates alone is insufficient. The industry requires expertise in Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) design, semiconductor engineering and advanced manufacturing. Universities should modernise curricula, strengthen industry partnerships and establish centres of excellence with practical training and industry-standard tools. The Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA) plans to train 3,500 young people over three years, but a much larger national programme linked to certification, internships and employment is needed. Bangladesh's global diaspora is another strategic asset. Through initiatives such as BRAINGAIN, experienced professionals can help develop curricula, mentor engineers, support research and connect local firms with global markets.
From Global Partnership to Commercial Partnership
The summit rightly highlighted the importance of global partnerships. No country develops a semiconductor industry in isolation. Success depends on international collaboration across design, manufacturing, packaging, research and supply chains. Bangladesh should build targeted partnerships that complement its strengths. Malaysia offers experience in packaging and testing, Taiwan and South Korea in manufacturing, Japan in materials and equipment, the United States in chip design and electronic design automation, Europe in automotive and industrial semiconductors, and India in developing design talent and attracting assembly and testing investment. Yet partnerships must be judged by results, not announcements.
Converting Momentum into an Execution Plan
The recent summit created valuable momentum and broad agreement on the priorities for Bangladesh's semiconductor future. The challenge now is to turn vision into execution.
First, adopt a realistic national semiconductor strategy with clear priorities, institutional responsibilities and measurable targets.
Second, establish a permanent delivery unit to coordinate implementation, remove bottlenecks and monitor progress.
Third, develop a world-class talent pipeline by strengthening selected universities through industry-led curricula, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, shared laboratories and internships.
Fourth, build shared national infrastructure, including testing, prototyping, cleanroom and advanced packaging facilities.
Fifth, attract technology-driven investors that bring expertise, export opportunities and supply-chain integration.
Sixth, strengthen intellectual property protection to ensure that innovation, chip designs and commercial knowledge are securely protected.
The Test Is Now Execution
Bangladesh does not need to become Taiwan overnight. Its objective should be to build capability and secure a competitive place in the global semiconductor value chain. The National Semiconductor Symposium and Bangladesh Electronics, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (BEAR) Summit 2026 has created important momentum. Its success will be measured not by announcements, but by skilled engineers, stronger research, productive partnerships and export growth.
