For more than four decades, Tom Cruise has been synonymous with breathtaking stunts, relentless action and seemingly impossible missions. But in the first trailer for his upcoming film “Digger”, the Hollywood star is almost unrecognisable.

Gone is his polished action-hero image. Instead, Cruise appears as an ageing billionaire with a protruding stomach, thinning white hair, an unusual accent and an inflated sense of self. The trailer, released on Monday (July 13), has sparked widespread discussion around the world, with many praising the actor’s dramatic transformation.

The film is directed by two-time Academy Award-winning Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G Iñárritu, whose previous works include “Birdman” and “The Revenant”. This time, he turns to black comedy to explore themes of climate change, corporate greed, political power and humanity’s uncertain future.

The story centres on Digger Rockwell, one of the world’s most powerful billionaires. After one of his company’s projects causes a massive glacier in Greenland to shift, what begins as a local environmental disaster quickly escalates into a global crisis. Scientists warn that the consequences could trigger catastrophic climate change and even increase the risk of nuclear conflict.

Despite the warnings, Digger initially dismisses the crisis, insisting there is no reason to halt his multibillion-dollar business because a glacier has moved only a few feet. His arrogance gradually turns him into one of the world’s most controversial figures.

As events spiral out of control, Digger embarks on a new mission—not to save the planet, but to reinvent himself as humanity’s saviour.

Cruise has described the role as one of the boldest transformations of his career. Through extensive make-up, prosthetics, a completely new physicality and an altered voice, the actor sheds his familiar screen persona.

The trailer shows him shifting effortlessly between dark humour, displays of power and grand declarations about saving the world. The contrast between the character’s comic absurdity and dangerous self-delusion appears to be one of the film’s defining strengths.

According to Iñárritu, the idea for “Digger” first came to him nearly a decade ago. Rather than simply telling another story, he wanted to create a film where tragedy and humour could exist side by side.

He has said that as the world faces increasingly complex crises, reality itself often feels absurd, and he wanted to capture that contradiction through satire.

Cruise’s involvement in the project also dates back several years. Around seven years ago, Iñárritu pitched the idea to the actor by personally narrating the entire story over several days instead of sending him a screenplay.

Cruise later recalled that he immediately realised the role would push him beyond his comfort zone and allow him to reinvent himself as an actor.

Alongside Cruise, the film stars Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.

Goodman portrays an ailing US president attempting to prevent the global catastrophe triggered by Digger’s actions.

Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, “Digger” was filmed over six months in the United Kingdom. Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki served as director of photography, with the film shot entirely in the VistaVision format to deliver an enhanced large-screen visual experience.

More than a black comedy, “Digger” explores a world where the decisions of a handful of powerful individuals shape humanity’s future, raising questions about whether corporate profit, political influence and personal ego can outweigh the survival of civilisation itself.

The film also marks a new chapter in Cruise’s career, presenting him in a morally complex role far removed from the action heroes that have defined much of his filmography.

“Digger”, distributed by Warner Bros Pictures, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
