Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila in a dowry case after recovering what was initially believed to be a pistol but was later found to be a pistol-shaped lighter.
The arrestee, Md Emon, was detained from his home in the Dayapara area of Mulaid village after police launched a raid prompted by TikTok videos in which he was seen displaying the pistol-like object, according to a police press release issued last night.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam of Sreepur Police Station told The Daily Star that the videos had created panic in the locality. During the raid, police recovered the object and found it to be a lighter designed to resemble a pistol.
Police alleged that Emon used the lighter to intimidate people and threaten his wife while demanding dowry. His wife, Mosammat Tahmina, 22, later filed a case with Sreepur Police Station, accusing him of assault and torture over dowry demands.
Police produced Emon before a court, which sent him to jail.
