National Film Award-winning filmmaker Shahnewaz Kakoli has been undergoing long-term treatment following a stroke, with her family struggling to manage mounting medical expenses.
Her husband, actor Pran Roy, said he has already sold his private car to help cover the cost of her treatment. Despite the sacrifice, he noted that the expenses remain overwhelming.
According to Pran Roy, Kakoli’s treatment currently costs more than Tk 8,000 per day. The stroke has left one side of her face partially paralysed, and she is still unable to speak normally.
“She is undergoing three types of therapy regularly,” he said. “There has been some improvement compared to before. She can now eat with her own hands and, with assistance, she can sit up.”
Kakoli first fell ill in October last year and was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed she had suffered a stroke. After receiving treatment for two consecutive months, she returned home for a brief period. However, she was readmitted on February 1 this year due to complications.
She is currently receiving treatment at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP).
With his professional commitments largely on hold, Pran Roy said the financial pressure has intensified. While he is receiving support from family members and friends, he is also considering seeking government assistance if necessary.Although the Actors Equity Bangladesh has extended support to Kakoli, Pran Roy alleged that he has received little response from Bangladesh Film Directors Association regarding assistance.
