Police today arrested a local leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir in connection with a case filed over an alleged attack on a BNP procession in Patuakhali's Bauphal upazila.
The arrestee is Md Imran Hossain, president of the Kalaiya union unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir in the upazila, said Bauphal upazila unit Chhatra Shibir President Arifur Rahman.
Imran was arrested from Kapuriapatti area around 1:00pm, said Md Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bauphal Police Station.
He was later produced before a court, which sent him to jail this afternoon, the OC added.
According to the case statement, local BNP leaders and activists brought out a procession on the night of June 27, protesting processions allegedly staged by Awami League activists in different parts of the country despite the party's activities remaining banned.
During the BNP procession, a group of local Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League activists allegedly attacked the march. Jamaat and Shibir activists joined the attack, the case alleges. At one stage, a chase and counter-chase broke out between BNP and Jamaat activists, leaving at least 10 people injured.
BNP leader Al Mamun later filed a case with Bauphal Police Station, accusing 40 named people, including Shibir leader Imran Hossain.
Imran was arrested in connection with that case, police said.
