Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam today said the prosecution expects to submit formal charges on July 21, when the International Crimes Tribunal reopens after its vacation, against 28 to 30 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the killings during the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown.
He said the crackdown on supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka was carried out on Hasina's instructions.
On May 5, the chief prosecutor said investigators had identified 58 killings linked to the crackdown on Hefazat-e-Islam's rally at Dhaka's Shapla Chattar and four other districts on May 5-6, 2013.
According to the prosecution, the death toll was verified through post-mortem reports, identification of burial sites, and statements from victims' family members.
It said 32 of the victims were killed in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
On March 12, the ICT issued arrest warrants for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former inspector general of police Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Benazir Ahmed, who later became chief of the Rapid Action Battalion and Bangladesh Police, and Gonojagoron Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker in connection with the killings.
Six people, including police officials and journalists, have already been shown arrested in the case.
