Cites opinion survey predicting comfortable victory

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan today said the public would not allow any conspiracy surrounding the upcoming national election, citing a recent survey (Prothom Alo survey) that suggested strong public backing for his party.

Referring to the survey, Nazrul said 65.9 percent respondents believed the BNP would win the highest number of seats in the election, while 25.9 percent said it would be Jamaat-e-Islami.

"The difference is 44 percent. And the others are much, much lower. Even many parties that are considered important did not even get one percent. Because of this situation, some may become frustrated or hopeless and attempt to pursue conspiracies," he said.

"But people who have already made up their minds will not let any conspiracy succeed, " he said while speaking at a discussion on a plan to build the country at the Krishibid Institution in the capital.

He said the fall of what he described as fascism and the demand for restoring democracy through a free and fair national election under a non-party neutral government had already been achieved.

"Fascism has fallen, and the interim government will complete the remaining task," he said.

Nazrul also criticised Bangladesh's development trajectory, arguing that economic growth had not benefited the wider population.

"We see big buildings, expressways, and new trains. But people's basic needs remain unmet," he said.

Citing media reports, he added that while Bangladesh records one of the fastest growth rates of millionaires relative to population, large numbers of people fall below the poverty line each year.

"This situation is unacceptable. You cannot call this development," he said.

The event was presided over by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were also present.

The opinion survey referred to by Nazrul was conducted by Keymakers Consulting Limited for Prothom Alo. This public opinion survey found that 65.9 percent of respondents expected BNP to win the most seats, while 25.9 percent said Jamaat-e-Islami would do so.
