Amazon MGM has stepped away from distributing a forthcoming film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The film, titled Artificial and directed by Luca Guadagnino, depicts a five-day period in 2023 when Altman was dismissed and then reinstated as chief executive of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The project has been in development for around a year.

The cast includes Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, Monica Barbaro as OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov as OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

In a statement to Deadline, Amazon MGM said it believed the film “will be better served if it were released by a different studio” and added that it was working with the filmmakers to find a new distributor. The decision was first reported by the publication Puck.

Amazon has been expanding its involvement in AI, including through a USD 50 billion investment in OpenAI announced earlier this year.
