Instagram has confirmed it is testing a new standalone application called Instants, which allows users to share candid, unedited photos that disappear after 24 hours, in a move that positions the platform more directly against ephemeral-sharing apps such as Snapchat and BeReal.

The app, currently available in Spain and Italy on both iOS and Android, lets users capture a photo in a single tap using only the in-app camera. Uploads from a device's camera roll are not permitted, and no editing tools are available beyond the ability to add text. Photos, referred to as "instants," can be viewed only once and remain available for 24 hours.

Users can share content with mutual followers or their existing Close Friends list, which carries across from the main Instagram app. Instagram says users will be able to use Instants either as a standalone app or as a feature within the main Instagram application.
