Makbul Chowdhury’s feature-length documentary, Mamun: In Praise of Shadows, will be screened in London.
Based on the work of renowned, Ekushey Padak-winning Bangladeshi portrait photographer Nasir Ali Mamun, the film’s UK premiere will take place at the 28th edition of the UK Asian Film Festival on May 3, 2026, at the Garden Cinema in London’s iconic Covent Garden.
According to a press release, the screening will be followed by a question and answer session with Makbul Chowdhury, moderated by Anita Horam.
The 62-minute film was produced by Kolakar Productions in Bengali, featuring a score by British musician Jack Bloor.
For over four decades, Nasir Ali Mamun has been a pioneering figure in Bangladeshi portrait photography. In the 1970s, he was the first to introduce the art form to the country. Since then, he has captured portraits of more than a thousand nationally and internationally acclaimed poets, artists, writers, and political figures. By photographing these significant personalities at defining moments in history, Mamun’s work has evolved into a living archive of the nation’s cultural and intellectual heritage.
Director Makbul Chowdhury spent more than five years creating the film. During this time, he accompanied Nasir Ali Mamun to various locations—including Dhaka, Kolkata, Paris, and New York—documenting his artistic journey and his relationships with distinguished individuals.
The documentary has already received widespread appreciation from art enthusiasts and critics alike.
The film’s world premiere was held in Dhaka in May 2024.
