Just weeks after being singled out for Brazil's painful World Cup exit, Bruno Guimaraes is set to become Arsenal's record signing in a reported £80 million move from Newcastle United.

The Brazil midfielder, who endured intense criticism after missing a crucial penalty in his country's last-16 defeat to Norway, is expected to sign a five-year contract until 2031, subject to a medical and official confirmation from both clubs.

Guimaraes was one of Carlo Ancelotti's standout performers throughout the tournament, but his campaign became defined by one moment. With Brazil level against Norway in the round of 16, the 28-year-old saw his first-half penalty, awarded after a foul on Matheus Cunha, saved by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

Norway capitalised as Erling Haaland struck twice to eliminate the five-time world champions, while Neymar's stoppage-time penalty proved only a consolation.

The midfielder later described the defeat as "the worst pain of my 28 years of life" and "the saddest day of my life" in a post on social media.

Despite that disappointment, Arsenal were undeterred. The reported £80 million fee, equivalent to around $108 million, would make Guimaraes Arsenal's most expensive signing and one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history.

If completed, the move represents a remarkable turnaround for a player who only days ago was at the centre of Brazil's World Cup heartbreak. Arsenal, however, have judged him on far more than a single penalty, believing his leadership, technical quality and consistency make him the ideal addition to Mikel Arteta's midfield.

For Guimaraes, the transfer offers an immediate opportunity to turn the page on the most painful chapter of his career and begin a new one at the Emirates Stadium.
