The death toll from flash floods in Nepal has reached 289, with hundreds of others still out of contact, reports The Kathmandu Post.

The update was provided around 1:30pm on Thursday by Nepali Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle.

Rescuers have recovered 108 bodies from the Chitwan District, 62 in Nawalparasi East, 27 in Dhading, 20 in Gorkha, 17 in Rasuwa, 15 in Nawalparasi West, 12 in Nuwakot, and nine in Tanahun

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority says 826 people remain out of contact, including residents, security personnel, and tourists.

Of this group, 644 are tourists, including 127 Nepalis and 517 foreign nationals. There are also 44 Nepali Army personnel, 28 police personnel, and 13 members of the Armed Police Force Nepal.

Floods tore through Rasuwa and other districts before surging downstream along the Trishuli and Narayani river systems on Wednesday, sweeping through settlements and damaging roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing as authorities continue to compile casualty figures.
