Actress Glenn Close and filmmaker Ridley Scott will receive Honorary Oscars at this year’s Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced.
The awards ceremony will take place on November 15. Veteran animator Floyd Norman and producing partners Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler will also be honoured.
In a statement, the Academy described the recipients as “five remarkable individuals whose groundbreaking work has forever shaped the art of film-making”.
Close has received eight Oscar nominations throughout her career but has never won a competitive Academy Award. Her nominated performances include roles in “Fatal Attraction”, “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Hillbilly Elegy”.
The Academy praised Close for her “unparalleled emotional range” and her ability to bring complex characters to life on screen. She will next appear in “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”, which is scheduled for release later this year.
Scott, one of the most influential filmmakers in Hollywood, has earned four Oscar nominations during his career. His notable works include “Thelma & Louise” and “Gladiator”.
The Academy described Scott as “a true visionary” whose work has had a lasting impact on global cinema and culture. His upcoming film, “The Dog Stars”, is set for release in August.According to the Academy, the Honorary Oscar recognises lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy. The Governors Awards will be held on November 15.
