The news that Bangladesh earned a record $3.17 billion in remittances in January is genuinely good news -- a strong start to the year and a reminder of how vital our expatriate workforce remains to the nation’s economic prosperity.

Behind these numbers are millions of Bangladeshis working far from home -- often in difficult conditions, with limited social protection, and exposed to the fluctuations of the global labour market, and their contributions remain indispensable for us.

While this record inflow is cause for celebration, it also carries a clear message about responsibility: To sustain and build on these gains, Bangladesh must continue to support its migrant workers with robust policies and services.

That includes ensuring safe and legal migration pathways, affordable and transparent remittance channels, protection against exploitation, and access to information that equips workers and families to make informed decisions.

Remittance stability also relies on strong economic conditions, good relations with host countries, and banking systems that make sending money easier and cheaper. Both the government and private sector must therefore work to ensure workers’ earnings reach home safely and without unnecessary delays.

Additionally, protection for migrant workers abroad must be reinforced. Bilateral agreements and legal safeguards can help ensure that workers are treated fairly, paid on time, and able to access justice when needed.

Training and upskilling programs can also equip prospective migrants with competencies that attract better, safer employment.

As Bangladesh seeks inclusive and resilient growth, the welfare of expatriate workers is a factor that we simply cannot forgo -- their well-being is part of our national prosperity.

The January remittance record is testament to the enduring contribution of Bangladesh’s workforce beyond its borders. We must honour that contribution with policies that match their importance.
