At least 11 students were injured and six vehicles damaged as a bus carrying students of Dhaka University hit other vehicles in Karwan Bazar area on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place around 8:30am when the university’s Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation double-decker bus, Khonika, was descending from the Karwan Bazar expressway ramp near Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, said Tejgaon Industrial Area police officer-in-charge Mahmudur Rahman.

Quoting the bus driver, Mahmudur said that the driver lost control of the bus due to break failure while coming down the ramp and hit two microbuses, two cars and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

The vehicles, including the DU bus, were severely damaged, he mentioned, adding that none sustained serious injuries although some individuals in the bus and other vehicles sustained minor injuries in the accident.

In a Facebook post, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union transport secretary Md Asif Abdullah wrote that at least 11 students were injured in the accident.

Among the injured, three students with head injuries were taken to Samorita Hospital, while two were admitted to Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, two to Insaf Baraka Hospital, one to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, two to the university medical centre, and one to Ibn Sina Hospital.

The police seized the bus and took the driver, Al-Amin, under police custody, according to the police.

Owners of other vehicles left with their damaged vehicles, said Mahmudur, adding that none of them filed compliant over the incident.

‘Legal actions will be taken upon receiving a compliant. The bus driver is in our custody,’ said Mahmudur.

On information, the police rushed to the spot and removed the damaged vehicles to ease traffic in the busy area, said the OC.
