Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that unidentified attackers targeted her convoy with stones, mud and other objects in North 24 Parganas district.

The incident took place in Halisahar as Mamata was travelling to meet the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who allegedly died in police custody, NDTV reported on Sunday.

A hostile crowd reportedly surrounded her convoy, throwing stones, shoes and water bottles and smearing her vehicle with mud.

“If my car windows were not closed, it could have split my head open. I could have died,” NDTV quoted Banerjee as telling reporters.

She also accused police officers at the scene of failing to protect her and alleged that the force was biased towards the BJP.

“The police did nothing to protect us. They give protection only to the BJP,” she said.

Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen were among the senior Trinamool Congress leaders accompanying her and also criticised the security arrangements.

The BJP denied involvement in the incident.

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation and legal action against those responsible, NDTV reported.
