Young visual artist Anindita Oni depicted womanhood in acrylic on stone in her first solo art exhibition titled She in Stone, which concluded on Tuesday at Daagi Art Garage at Hazaribagh in the capital.
The five-day exhibition features 30 stone-based artworks that explore the cyclic journey of womanhood through texture, memory, erosion, and time. The artist collected stones from the Mahananda River in Panchagarh, using acrylic paint to transform this unconventional medium into artwork.
Most of her artworks were figurative, while the uneven surfaces and the use of vibrant colours gave them an antique look, reminiscent of cave paintings.
Merging parts of the female body with floral motifs, her paintings — including Emergence, Realm of Imagination, The Unfolding Wings, Inner Flame, Face of Resilience, Lotus Birth, Beneath Her Roots, and Body of Seasons — reflect distinct chapters of womanhood, such as adolescence, motherhood, and self-discovery.
Some representational artworks, such as A Time of Dreams, Memory Hour, The Unspoken Weight, Last Letter, and Unveiling the Self, also portray the daily struggles of a woman from childhood to old age.
‘In my work, stone speaks, silence carries memory, and time leaves its invisible marks on every layer. Human life—especially the inner world of women, the tenderness of childhood, the warmth of love, and the sigh of separation—is depicted,’ she said, adding that she searches for human stories, the language of silence, and the endless beauty of existence.
Anindita Oni earned her BFA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka Art College.
The exhibition was inaugurated on June 19.
