An eight‑year‑old boy has been killed after being struck by a vehicle from the motorcade of newly elected BNP lawmaker Alamgir Md Mahfujullah Farid in Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria.
The incident occurred around 4:30pm on Sunday on the main road near Badarkhali Fazil Madrasa.
The victim, identified as Khaled Bin Walid, was a second-grade student at a local madrasa and the son of expatriate Amanul Islam.
Chakaria Police chief Mohammad Monir Hossain said the boy was hit while attempting to cross the road.
He was rushed to Badarkhali General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Monir confirmed that the vehicle involved was part of the MP's convoy but not his personal car.
An angry mob intercepted the vehicle near the Ferryghat area after the accident and vandalised it.
Alamgir, who was elected from the Cox's Bazar-2 constituency, comprising Moheshkhali and Kutubdia, described the event as "tragic".
He claimed that the vehicle involved was a rented one and empty at the time.
“I don’t have a car of my own. Since that vehicle was at the tail of the convoy, I only learnt about the accident later. The driver has since fled,” the MP told journalists.
Bulbul Sikdar, former president of Badarkhali Union Juba Dal, noted that the convoy was returning from a post-election visit to Kutubdia.
The victim’s family is waiting for the boy's father to return from abroad on Monday before deciding on filing a case over the incident, local BNP leaders said.
Police have seized the vehicle.
