A scuffle broke out between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir at the University of Dhaka's Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall in the wee hours of Monday.
The incident took place around 2:45am when the confined Hall Provost Prof Dr Elias Al-Mamun was being brought out of his office.
Several students, including Dhaka University (DU) Hall Students' Union Vice-President (VP) Abu Naim and General Secretary (GS) Imam-ul Hasan, were reportedly injured in the incident. They were later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, sources said.
Earlier on Sunday evening, Shibir activists, Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and hall union leaders, along with a group of students, confined hall provost to his office and demanded his resignation. The demand of his resignation was made over an allegation that a student had been detained and tortured inside the hall provost's office.
The protesting students said they wanted to see the CCTV footage of the alleged incident from the provost. However, the footage was not shown to them. Later, they locked the gate of the provost's office and continued their sit-in, demanding his resignation.
Witnesses said DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Acting Proctor Prof Md Israfil Prang and several assistant proctors arrived at the hall at that night to take the provost out of his office.
At one point, the hall union, Shibir and DUCSU leaders also confined the university officials inside the provost's office.
Later, the two pro-vice-chancellors left the area. Acting Proctor Prof Israfil Prang remained at the gate of the provost's office along with Hall Union VP Abu Naim, GS Imam-ul Hasan and several other students.
