Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, former coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement that led topple of the Awami League regime, and a recently resigned adviser to the interim government, has announced that he will contest the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from the Dhaka-10 constituency as an independent candidate.

His political destination had been the subject of intense speculation over the past several weeks.

Several political parties were rumored to be in talks with him, with the latest and strongest buzz suggesting that he was set to join the Gono Odhikar Parishad.

On Friday, Asif Mahmud cleared all speculation by posting a video on his verified Facebook page, formally announcing his candidacy.

“I will contest the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-10 as an independent candidate. I seek your support and cooperation,” he wrote in the caption.

The Dhaka-10 constituency, comprised of Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, New Market, and Hazaribagh, now includes Asif Mahmud as a registered voter, a detail he confirmed himself.

Rumors had been circulating for days that he was not joining the National Citizen Party (NCP), formed by former leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement.

On Wednesday, Asif Mahmud announced his resignation as adviser for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives at a press conference, where he once again hinted at participating in the election.

Now, putting an end to all speculation, he has declared that he will enter the race as an independent candidate.
