The mortal remains of actor and director Ataur Rahman were brought to the Central Shaheed Minar at 3:25 pm today, where people from all walks of life gathered to pay their final respects.
The venue became a space of deep emotion as leading figures from Bangladesh’s theatre, cultural, and artistic communities came to bid farewell. Among those present were faculty members from the Theatre Departments of Jagannath University and the University of Dhaka, along with many prominent cultural personalities.

Those who paid tribute included Ramendu Majumdar, Khairul Anam Shakil, Mofidul Hoque, Asif Munir, Shankar Shawjal, Sara Zaker, Zahid Hasan, Tariq Anam Khan, Laisa Ahmed Lisa, Lucky Enam, Jeetu Ahsan, and many others.
Not only individuals, but also several cultural and theatre organisations paid their respects to the late theatre legend. Tributes were offered on behalf of organisations including Kanthoshilon, Chhayanaut, Abdullah Al-Mamun Theatre School, Udichi, the Theatre Department of the University of Dhaka, the Theatre Department of Jagannath University, Directors’ Guild, Actors’ Equity, and Dhaka Theatre.

In an atmosphere filled with grief and reverence, colleagues, admirers, students, and cultural activists gathered at the Shaheed Minar to pay their final homage to the beloved theatre personality.
Many also reflected on Ataur Rahman’s lifelong contribution to Bangladesh’s theatre and cultural landscape, recalling various aspects of his remarkable career.
His body will later be taken from the Central Shaheed Minar to the Banani Graveyard, where he will be laid to rest.
