Bangladesh has condemned in the strongest terms the ‘heinous attack by Israeli forces’ in Southern Lebanon on Monday, which resulted in the killing of two Bangladeshi nationals.
The victims were identified as Shafiqul Islam of Satkhira Sadar upazila in Satkhira district and Md Nahidul Islam Nahid of Ashashuni upazila also in Satkhira, according to a foreign ministry press release issued in Dhaka on Tuesday.
‘The Government of Bangladesh expresses its profound grief and deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims,’ said the release.
It mentioned that the Bangladesh embassy in Lebanon was working with the relevant local authorities to complete the necessary formalities for the repatriation of their mortal remains.
The mission is also in touch with the family members of the deceased persons, the release added.
Bangladesh reiterated its deep concern over the continued violence and loss of civilian lives in the region and calls for maximum restraint and adherence to international humanitarian law.
With the latest victims, at least 10 Bangladeshis were killed in the Middle East countries, major destinations for Bangladeshi migrant workers, including three in Lebanon since the United States and Israel’s joint attacks on Iran and retaliatory strikes from Iran on the US bases across the Gulf states since February 28.
New Age correspondent in Satkhira reported that relatives of Shafiqul and Nahidul at their village homes in Sadar and Ashashuni upazilas were mourning their deaths in the Israeli drone attack in Lebanon.
The shocking news rendered their parents speechless, relatives said, adding that both went to Lebanon a few months ago to support their poverty-hit families back in Satkhira.
The Satkhira local administration after visiting the homes of the victim families assured them of the government initiatives to bring back their bodies.
Satkhira Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Arnab Datta Bhaluka and Ashashuni UNO Shyama Nanda Kundu visited the victims’ homes in their respective areas, assuring that the local administrations would stand by the victims’ families.
