Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis has described the Dhaka-13 election result as a “vote robbery” and called for its cancellation and a judicial investigation.
At a press conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka's Purana Paltan today, Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed alleged widespread irregularities during the February 12 vote. He said agents of the party’s “rickshaw” symbol were expelled from several polling centres, and voters, including women, were intimidated.
Jalaluddin also claimed that the party’s ameer and candidate, Allama Mamunul Haque, was confined while visiting polling stations and later escorted away with army assistance. He said that around 4:30pm, polling agents were forced out of several centres, and chief agents were barred from entering key locations.
He further alleged ballot stuffing, voter influence, and tampering during the counting process, including abnormal increases in votes for the “sheaf of paddy” symbol and cancellation of thousands of valid votes for the "rickshaw" symbol.
“Despite submitting evidence-backed complaints the Election Commission published the official gazette before resolving objections,” Jalaluddin said.
Referring to the death of BNP activist Haidar Ali following clashes and baton charges in Ward 34, Jalaluddin called for a neutral judicial investigation.
He claimed that the BNP lawmaker for Dhaka-13 and state education minister, Bobby Hajjaj, visited the hospital on the morning of the victim’s death and threatened to file cases against Mamunul Haque, other religious scholars, and madrasa students.
The party warned of nationwide resistance against any harassment of religious scholars and madrasa students and outlined six demands, including cancellation of the Dhaka-13 result, judicial probes into the death and alleged irregularities, the formation of an independent commission to investigate electoral misconduct nationwide, an end to political harassment and false cases, and security guarantees for its leaders and supporters.
