The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday said they have sufficient evidence linking a Bangabhaban official, Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, to the hacking of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s X account.

Meanwhile, a case was filed in the capital, and the suspect was formally arrested.

Additional Police Commissioner of the Detective Branch of Police Shafiqul Islam made the comments at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday night.

He said Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban, was arrested after taking permission from the President’s Office, the Secretariat and the relevant authorities.

“We have adequate evidence of his involvement in the incident,” the DB chief said.

A case was filed with Hatirjheel police station around 8:30pm on Wednesday by Sirajul Islam, coordinator of Jamaat-e-Islami’s election management committee. Besides Sarwar-e-Alam, 20 unidentified persons have been named as accused in the case.

Shafiqul Islam said all devices used by the arrested official have been seized and sent for forensic examination.

He also said a previously filed general diary (GD) in connection with the incident has been merged with the case.

Urging people not to spread misinformation over the hacking issue, the DB chief said a full investigation is underway.

Earlier, Sarwar-e-Alam was detained in a raid at a government quarter on the eastern side of the Rajarbagh Police Lines auditorium late on Tuesday night.

On Saturday night, a screenshot of a post from Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s X handle went viral on social media, containing an offensive comment about working women. The post was later removed.

In a statement, Jamaat-e-Islami said the post was published through a cyberattack and that false statements were circulated in the name of its ameer.
