The police arrested 37 leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities are now banned, and its banned student wing Bangladesh Chhatra league and other affiliated bodies in Noakhali and Chattogram on Saturday over the allegations of holding processions in defiance of the ban.

Of them, 24 were arrested in Noakhali and 13 were arrested in Chattogram.


New Age Correspondent in Noakhali reported, quoting local police, that 24 people were arrested, including nine members of the Juba League and 15 BCL activists.

Sudharam Model police station officer-in-charge Md Towhidul Islam said that they had arrested them after conducting raids in Aojbalia and Kaladarap areas under sadar upazila and Noakhali sadar municipality in the early hours of Saturday.

‘We have produced them before a court on Saturday evening and the court ordered sending them to jail,’ Towhidul said.

According to local people, over 2,500 people under the leadership of BCL Noannoi union unit former president Ashraful Karim brought out the procession at Badherhat Bazar area under Sadar upazila in the district.

The Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested 13 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated organisations over their participation in Friday’s procession in the city’s Agrabad area, New Age Staff Correspondent in Chattogram reported.

The police arrested them in special drives conducted in different areas of the city, the CMP said in a press release issued on Saturday evening.

The police also seized two buses used in the procession, four pieces of white cloth, 10 sticks and 13 brick chips from the spot.

According to the press release, leaders and activists of the banned BCL, AL’s youth wing Juba League and other affiliated organisations of the party gathered beside Islami Bank Hospital near Barik Building at around 10:25am on Friday.

On May 11, 2025, professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government banned all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League until the trial of the party and its leaders by the International Crimes Tribunal, amid mounting protests led by student groups and political activists demanding a ban on and the trial of the party.
