Video game publishers are clearing the final months of 2026 almost entirely, reshuffling their biggest releases to avoid landing anywhere near 'Grand Theft Auto VI'. The Rockstar title, due on November 19 after two delays, is expected to be the most dominant entertainment launch of the year, and the industry is not taking chances.

At the Summer Games Fest in Los Angeles on Friday, the fallout was plain. More than a dozen major titles, including 'Wolverine', 'Silent Hill: Townfall', and 'Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve', have clustered into September, according to a recent AFP report. 'Star Wars Zero Company' has claimed August 27. Even 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4', one of the few franchises with enough muscle to risk a close encounter, has settled on October 23, a slot widely regarded as the last safe date before the GTA shockwave hits.

Christopher Dring, founder of specialist outlet The Game Business, described to AFP that the late-October window is "frequently cited as the latest you can release a game and not get sucked into that Rockstar black hole". Ampere Analysis reinforced the view, calling GTA VI the "biggest premium release" of the period and forecasting that player engagement will stretch at least until the new year.

The Summer Games Fest, hosted by Geoff Keighley between showcases from Sony and Microsoft, also offered a look further out. Square Enix’s 'Final Fantasy VII Revelation' is now planned for spring 2027, and a reimagined 'Resident Evil: Code Veronica', renamed 'Resident Evil Veronica', is also lined up for 2027, a reminder of how heavily publishers lean on familiar names.

Fresh ideas still found room. '1666 Amsterdam', from Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets, and 'Gen Atlas', by celebrated Japanese designer Fumito Ueda, were both announced, proving that original projects are not entirely swept aside even as the rest of the calendar gives way to a single, towering release.
