Three Bangladeshis were injured in an Israeli attack in the southern Nabatiyeh region of Lebanon on May 28.

The injured are Joyena Akter, 37, of Narsingdi; Momin Miah, 38 of Brahmanbaria and a child, said Anwar Hossain, first secretary (Labour) of Bangladesh embassy in Lebanon.

“The identity of the child has not been known yet,” he told The Daily Star today.

One leg of Joyena Akter has been amputated, he said, adding that all of the three are undergoing treatment at the Rageb Harb Hospital in Nabatiyeh.

“We are in touch with the local authorities to ensure proper treatment of the injured,” Anwar Hossain said.

Since the Israeli attacks on Lebanon’s southern region in early March this year, so far five Bangladeshis have been killed.

The body of one Bangladeshi, who is believed to be killed, could not be recovered from under the debris in Southern Lebanon, because that area is almost off-limits to the people.

Even law enforcers need special approval for moving to that area because of security risks, Anwar said.

Lebanon is home to nearly one lakh Bangladeshis. A few thousand of them have been displaced and jobless because of the war, but charities and the Bangladesh embassy have provided food support to them on a needs basis.

Lebanese authorities have granted amnesty to the undocumented Bangladeshis to return to Bangladesh without paying any penalty.

Under the scheme, some 500 Bangladeshis have registered for return, and the process for their return is underway, said Anwar Hossain.
