Five people, including three members of a family, were killed after a private car rammed into a truck waiting in a toll queue on the Dhaka–Bhanga expressway in Faridpur early today.

The deceased were identified as Nurjahan Begum, 50, wife of Md Shahidul of Baliadanga village in Jashore’s Jhikargacha upazila; their daughter Ayesha Begum, 28, sons Arif Islam, 25, and Rakib Islam, 18, all from Baliadanga village in Jashore's Jhikargachha upazila, and the car driver, Zahid Hossain, 32, of Monirampur upazila.

According to Shibchar Highway Police, the accident occurred around 3:45am in the Maligram area of Bhanga upazila when a private car travelling towards Bhanga lost control and crashed into the rear of a truck carrying gas cylinders.

The impact left the car mangled and critically injured the driver and five passengers.

Abu Zafar, station officer of Bhanga Fire Service, said firefighters and police rescued the victims from the wreckage and took them to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, where four were pronounced brought dead.

The remaining two injured passengers were later referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. One of them succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment there, raising the death toll to five, he added.

Confirming the incident, Md Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Highway Police Station, said both the private car and the truck involved in the accident had been taken into police custody.
