A group photography exhibition titled ‘Women in the July Uprising: Essential Then—Why Erased Now?’ is under way at the South Plaza of Bangladesh National Parliament in Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
The exhibition is a part of the 16-day long 11th Chobi Mela, an international photography festival jointly organised by Drik Picture Library and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute.
The exhibition reflects on the women who were central to the July 2024 uprising and asks where they have gone in the aftermath of the fallen autocracy.
A total of 53 photographs by 25 photographers, researched by photographer Jannatul Mawa, show the peoples participation, especially women, during the student-led mass uprising including protests, clash between law enforcement agencies, clash with ruling party goons and also the protesters, curfew and post uprising situation.
Photographers including Abdul Goni, Ashraful Alom, Derril Audri Roy, Dipu Malakar, Habibul Haque, Istiak Karim, Jibon Ahmed, Joyeeta Roy, Sawrav Das, Sony Ramani, Suvra Kanti Das and Taslima Akhter displayed their photographs to depict the role of women in the uprising.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Sunday morning while ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh and head of the EU delegation Michael Miller attended the event as the special guest.
The festival’s chief advisor Shahidul Alam, festival director ASM Rezaur Rahman, photographer Jannatul Mawa, and artistic director Munem Wasif also attended the event, while among the participants Istiak Karim, Joyeeta Roy, and Suvra Kanti were present.
The exhibition will end on January 31.
