Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today said Bangladesh has “become famous for forgery,” expressing displeasure over the misuse of technology in producing fake documents.
Making fake documents using technology proves that Bangladeshis are highly talented and creative, he said. “Let us make up our minds that we will come out of fraud, take steps to ensure realistic policies, and build a pro-people system of governance.”
Yunus was speaking at the inaugural session of the Digital Device and Innovation Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
Calling ICT the “core sector” from which the future will be shaped, the chief adviser stressed, “I am talking about this sector, because it is a key sector. The future will be created from this sector.”
He cautioned that although it may appear that Bangladesh is moving alongside others, in reality, the country is far behind in thinking, action, and self-preparedness.
“The coming world will be fundamentally different. The things we can't imagine now will become reality. The world is changing rapidly . . . so if we can't gear up our speed and align with this global momentum, we should think how far we will fall behind,” he said.
Highlighting outdated worldviews in the ICT sector, Yunus called for true digital governance.
He recalled how shutting down internet services during the uprising triggered nationwide anger and contributed to the fall of an “otherwise powerful government,” proving how vital connectivity has become.
Yunus noted that children today interact with technology instinctively, creating a widening gap between generations.
People would not come to the government, rather government service will go to them, he said, adding that such reforms would significantly reduce corruption.
Earlier, Yunus launched the website and logo of the Bangladesh Innovation Challenge, aimed at fostering innovation at school and college levels.
The expo, jointly organised by the ICT Division, BHTPA and BCS, will run till January 31 under the theme ‘Bangladesh to the World’. It features innovation showcases, digital devices, mobile and e-sports, product offers, five seminars and four panel discussions.
Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications and IT Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb attended as special guest, with ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury in the chair. BHTPA Managing Director Md Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan and BCS President Mohammad Zahirul Islam delivered welcome addresses.
