Two decades ago, the television serial “Bondhon” aired on Ekushey Television and quickly became one of the most talked-about and widely watched dramas of its time. Actress Sharmin Shila rose to prominence through her portrayal of Sadia, a character that became synonymous with her identity. For years, audiences rarely addressed her by her real name. Wherever she went, people called her Sadia. Even today, she says she has become so accustomed to hearing that name from fans and those close to her.

Although “Bondhon” remains one of the defining milestones of her career, Sharmin Shila has appeared in several other successful television dramas that further elevated her popularity.

One of them was “Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo”, directed by Taher Shipon and adapted from a novel by celebrated author Humayun Ahmed. Another was the long-running serial “Lal Neel Beguni”, which also received widespread acclaim.

Once one of Bangladesh's most popular television actresses, Sharmin Shila has now been living in London for the past six years. During this period, she has remained away from the country's entertainment industry but continues to stay connected to the creative field through Arian Films.

Arian Films produces television dramas and advertisements in London, where Shila works to plan and develop the company's creative direction and overall growth. Alongside her professional responsibilities, she has also completed a diploma in make-up artistry.

Asked how much she enjoys her life and work in London, Shila said, "I'm enjoying the work here. It feels good."
Looking back on her career, she reflected on the lasting impact of “Bondhon” and the character of Sadia.

"To be honest, many people still mention ‘Bondhon’ to me. They talk about Sadia. While I was living in Dhaka, wherever I travelled, both at home and abroad, people would remember me as Sadia from ‘Bondhon’. Even here in London, some people still bring it up. It feels wonderful to know that people have remembered the character for so many years."

Responding to another question, she said, "Every stage of life has its own beauty. I'm happy with where I am now. I'm working and spending time supporting my son's education."

She began her acting career in 1999 with the BTV serial “Rong Kora Putul”. The seven-episode drama brought her early recognition, while her extensive modelling work also contributed significantly to her growing popularity.

Speaking about “Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo”, she said the drama continues to receive appreciation, even from Bangladeshis living in London.

"Some people here still ask me about my character, Rina, from ‘Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo’. The drama received an incredible response. The director made it with great care. Since it was adapted from Humayun Ahmed's immensely popular novel, it naturally attracted audiences. Thanks to YouTube, people continue to watch it even today. The drama brought me tremendous appreciation."

She added that Bangladeshis often recognise her while she is out in London. "When I'm out and about, Bangladeshis often tell me that I look familiar. Then they mention the names of my dramas. It always feels very special."

Reflecting on the long-running serial Lal Neel Beguni, directed by acclaimed actor Zahid Hasan, she said, "‘Lal Neel Beguni’ was also warmly received by audiences. It brought me immense recognition as well."

Although she occasionally attends Bangladeshi community events in London, her busy schedule does not allow her to participate regularly.

Despite adapting to life in the UK, she admits that Dhaka remains close to her heart. "I miss Dhaka so much. I even miss riding rickshaws despite the traffic. I miss eating chotpoti and fuchka. I miss every corner of the city. I'm here because life has brought me here, but I miss Bangladesh every single day."
Speaking about her family, she said, "My daughter lives in Australia, while my only son is studying at school in London. I have a few plans for the future."

Asked whether she hopes to return to acting, Sharmin Shila replied, "Yes, I do want to act again. I plan to continue acting here in London."
