The Nationalist Teachers’ Forum of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has condemned the harassment of a Chittagong University (CU) Law Department Asst Professor during the ongoing admission tests, expressing serious concern over the growing culture of mob justice on university campuses.
In a statement issued on Sunday, signed by Forum President Professor Shamsul Alam and General Secretary Professor Jamal Uddin, the organisation said that forcibly dragging a teacher to the proctor’s office, publicly humiliating him, and circulating videos of the incident on social media amount to a grave violation of the dignity of teachers and the country’s higher education system.
The Forum stressed that regardless of ideological differences or controversies related to a teacher’s past actions, any allegations must be addressed through proper administrative and judicial procedures, not through intimidation or harassment.
According to the statement, repeated incidents of teacher harassment by certain student groups have created an atmosphere of fear on campuses, disrupting teaching, learning, and research activities.
The Forum demanded an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the CU incident and called for strict legal action against those responsible. It also criticised the university authorities for failing to ensure the safety and dignity of teachers and urged them to take effective measures to prevent similar incidents.
Warning that tolerance of mob behaviour would undermine democratic values and academic freedom, the Forum called for the implementation of strict anti-mob policies on university campuses.
