David Miller believes South Africa have grown into a mature, battle-hardened unit capable of conquering the biggest stages, and his match-winning knock against India was proof of that belief.

The experienced left-hander lit up Ahmedabad with a blistering 63 off just 35 deliveries, earning the player of the match award and powering South Africa to a commanding 76-run victory over India in their opening Super Eights clash of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Sunday.

The emphatic win not only ended India’s 12-match winning streak in the tournament but also sent a strong message to the rest of the competition.

For Miller, the performance was about more than just runs on the board -- it was about belief.

“Today proves that they are beatable,” he said after the match. “India are an incredible team, but in a tournament like this it’s about focusing on the simple things, staying in your lane, and getting the job done.”

South Africa posted a formidable 187-7, with Miller leading the charge and valuable late hitting from Tristan Stubbs providing the finishing touches. In response, the defending champions faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs — their first unsuccessful chase of the tournament.

Left-arm quick Marco Jansen ripped through the batting order with figures of 4-22, while spinner Keshav Maharaj claimed 3-24, exposing cracks in India’s batting line-up on a surface that demanded discipline and adaptability.

Captain Aiden Markram praised his side’s composure and growth.

“Great performance. It was a very different type of wicket to what we've had here, so it was great to see the boys assess that early and adapt. The bowling group has been working incredibly hard, and tonight they really delivered.”

After finishing runners-up to India at the previous T20 World Cup, South Africa now appear determined to go one step further. According to Miller, their shared experience is the key difference.

“We’re a mature team. A lot of guys have played together for a long time and that counts under pressure. It’s about staying in your lane, doing your job, and always wanting more.”

With confidence high and momentum building, the Proteas have made a powerful statement: they are no longer just contenders — they believe they are ready to be champions.
