A general diary (GD) has been lodged with Shahbagh Police Station against three women, including actresses Meher Afroz Shaon and Mahiya Mahi, for allegedly mocking the July uprising and disrespecting its memorial on social media.

A platform named Rashtra Sanglap Forum has filed a general diary (GD) against Shaon, Mahi and Shanta Farjana.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter to The Daily Star today.

"A general diary has been filed, and an investigation is underway. Subsequent legal action will be taken after the probe," the OC said.

Three central leaders of the platform -- Member Secretary ANM Ayas, Organiser Tuhin Farazi, and Chief Organiser Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha -- lodged the GD yesterday.

According to the complaint, Shanta Farjana threw a shoe at the July memorial. Meanwhile, Shaon allegedly portrayed the July uprising as a "staged event", while Mahi allegedly mocked individuals and organisations that participated in the movement.

The complainants alleged that the accused made defamatory remarks and social media posts to create public confusion and question the spirit of the uprising. They demanded a thorough investigation and strict legal action against the trio.

The GD included links to three Facebook posts. However, no posts were found at the links submitted against Shaon and Mahi at the time of filing this report.

Police sources said the complaint has been forwarded to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Cyber Crime Unit for further scrutiny. The cyber unit will verify the social media posts, statements and the submitted links before taking the next legal steps.

Following the filing of the GD, Rashtra Sanglap Forum held a press conference in front of Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University yesterday.

"They claimed that hundreds were not martyred [in the July uprising], and that it was all a drama. Mahiya Mahi said the injured were acting. We have filed a complaint against the three over such remarks," ANM Ayas alleged at the briefing.
