The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested former speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from her Dhanmondi residence early today in connection with a case filed over the July uprising.

Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner of DB, DMP, confirmed the development to The Daily Star this morning.

“She has been taken to the DB office,” he said.

Shafiqul Islam said she was arrested in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station over incidents during the July uprising. She will be produced before a court today.

Responding to a query about remand, the police official said she is currently being questioned. A decision on whether to seek remand will be taken after interrogation, he added.

According to the official website of the Bangladesh Parliament, Shirin served as Speaker from April 30, 2013, until her resignation on September 2, 2024.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, multiple cases have been filed against party leaders across the country.

On August 27, a case was filed against Shirin in connection with the death of a jeweller, Muslim Uddin, in Rangpur during the July uprising.

However, the DB has not disclosed the specific case in which she was arrested.
