Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina (1.00am, Saturday, Bangladesh Time)
USA vs Paraguay (7.00am, Saturday, Bangladesh Time)

The spotlight shifts firmly onto North America's co-hosts on the second day of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Canada and the United States prepare to embrace the pressure, expectation and excitement of opening their campaigns in front of home crowds.

Almost exactly eight years after Canada, the USA and Mexico were awarded the right to stage football's biggest spectacle together, Friday marks a historic milestone. Canada will play their first-ever FIFA World Cup match as hosts in Toronto, while the United States return to the World Cup stage on home soil for the first time since 1994.

History awaits in Toronto.

Canada begin their Group B journey against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a side that has already proven it fears no reputation. The Balkan nation stunned Italy in the play-offs to secure one of the final tickets to North America and arrive determined to spoil the hosts' celebration.

Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez acknowledged his side's underdog status but insisted they would not be overawed by the occasion.

"We are a small country," Barbarez said. "This is our second ever World Cup and for sure we are sort of an underdog in many of the matches ahead."

Bosnia's previous World Cup appearance came in Brazil in 2014, where they recorded one victory but exited in the group stage. Led by veteran striker Edin Dzeko, the Dragons believe their fighting spirit can once again bridge the gap against more fancied opposition.

"I love this game between David and Goliath," Barbarez said. "We play with our hearts and that has been our advantage."

Dzeko, Bosnia's all-time leading scorer with 73 goals, has recovered from a shoulder injury and is expected to start.

For Canada, the challenge extends beyond securing three points. The co-hosts are chasing their first-ever World Cup victory while attempting to navigate the unique pressures that come with playing in front of an expectant home crowd.

Barbarez anticipates an intense encounter.

"I am maybe exaggerating a bit but I'm sure the game is going to be quite intense, which is characteristic of both the teams," he said.

As Toronto hosts a landmark moment in Canadian football history, the attention of the global audience will later shift west to Los Angeles.

A Hollywood-style opening ceremony will set the stage before the United States launch their Group D campaign against Paraguay.

Expectations have steadily grown around Mauricio Pochettino's side, with many viewing this generation of American players as one capable of making a deep run on home soil.

Captain Christian Pulisic believes the Americans are ready for the challenge.

"We want to be a real force in this tournament," Pulisic told AFP.

"We've got three really good games to show everyone what we're all about."

Paraguay, however, arrive with a reputation for unsettling giants. During South American qualifying, they defeated both Argentina and Brazil, prompting Pochettino to warn against complacency.

"Paraguay has shown in qualification for this World Cup how tough it is to play against," the US coach said.

"They beat Argentina, Brazil. My expectation is tomorrow is going to be very tough, because Paraguay are not only competitive and aggressive. They have good quality."

Pulisic stressed that the United States must combine talent with resilience if they are to live up to the hype surrounding them.

"We know we have to be ready to battle," he said. "It's not about just playing beautiful football."

The United States are expected to field an attack led by Folarin Balogun, alongside Pulisic and Sergino Dest, with Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman and Tyler Adams forming the backbone of midfield.

For Pochettino, success cannot simply be measured by advancing beyond the group stage.

"For me, successful is to win," he said. "Is to win tomorrow. And win after.

"If we don't arrive to the final and we don't win the World Cup, to talk about 'successful'? I don't know."

Day two of the World Cup belongs to the hosts.

From the electric atmosphere expected in Toronto to the glamour and anticipation surrounding Los Angeles, Canada and the United States have the opportunity to transform years of preparation into performances that could define their tournaments.

For two nations carrying the hopes of home supporters, the celebrations can wait.

Now comes the real test.
