Protesting the killing of Jamaat leader Maulana Rezaul Karim, a protest rally was held at Sherpur district town this afternoon.

Jamaat-e-Islami Sherpur district unit organised the protest event.

Rezaul Karim, 42, secretary of Sreebordi upazila unit of Jamaat, was the Arabic lecturer at Fatehpur Fazil Madrasa in the upazila.

Rezaul was killed in a clash between BNP and Jamaat activists at an election manifesto read-out programme in Jhenaigati under the Sherpur-3 (Sreebordi-Jhenaigati) constituency on January 28.

Before the rally, a procession was brought out from College Intersection in the town. After parading the main thoroughfares of the town, it ended at the main gate of the deputy commissioner’s office.

Presided over by Sherpur district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Hafizur Rahman, leaders Hafez Rashedul Islam, Nuruzzaman Badal and Golam Kibria addressed the rally, among others.

The leaders said they must ensure a landslide victory for “daripalla” as a revenge for the killing of Rezaul in the upcoming election.

If those involved in the killing are not brought to justice swiftly, they said they would lay siege to the DC’s office, if necessary.

Jamaat also announced a doa mahfil in memory of Rezaul at Jhenaigati tomorrow afternoon (January 31).

Following Rezaul's death, law enforcement agencies are in high alert to avert any untoward incidents.

However, no case was lodged as of filing this report around 7:30pm today. The filing of a case is underway, said Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, additional police superintendent (Administration and Finance) in Sherpur.
