Preparations for welcoming Bengali New Year 1433 began with an art workshop at the faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University on Monday.

The workshop aims to raise funds by selling artworks created by students, teachers, and alumni of the faculty, alongside renowned artists from across the country, to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, Bengali New Year’s Day.

Dhaka University pro-vice chancellor professor Saima Haque Bidisha inaugurated the preparatory activities as the chief guest, while Ekushey Padak-winning artist professor Abdus Sattar spoke as the special guest.

The event was presided over by the dean of the faculty, professor Md Azharul Islam Sheikh. Proctor professor Saifuddin Ahmed, along with assistant proctors, faculty members, students, cultural figures, and artists, was also in attendance.

‘Preliminary activities have already begun through various committees to ensure the success of the festival, while the university administration is also working to celebrate the Bangla New Year in a peaceful, orderly, and festive atmosphere,’ professor Bidisha said.

Professor Abdus Sattar noted that the traditional procession has become an icon of the Bengali New Year celebration, which requires a significant workload from the artist community and people across the country.

‘A nation builds unity within itself through its cultural activities. Bangladesh’s cultural heritage is incredibly rich, a shining example of which is Pahela Baishakh,’ he stated.

Professor Md Azharul Islam Sheikh mentioned that the title of the procession will remain the same as in previous years and noted that this does not conflict with its status as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, as declared by UNESCO.

Ananda Shobhajatra, previously titled Mangal Shobhajatra, is a decades-old tradition of the university. This colourful procession, celebrating the tradition of arts and crafts in Bengal, is held on the morning of April 14, starting from the faculty of fine arts.

‘Dhaka University organised this event in coordination with various ministries because it has become a national celebration, and the faculty of fine arts proudly hosts the procession, said Azharul.

Art lovers can collect artworks at affordable prices and contribute to the Pahela Baishakh celebrations until April 13, he added.
